April showers?

Following a windy March, I wonder if we’re going to have the traditional April showers this year?

This time last year we were thinking about the possibility of drought during the summer … and gardening programmes on the television were giving us advice about how to produce beautiful gardens without wasting water.

As it turned out of course, we had a much wetter summer than we expected … with all the awful experiences of flooding. I wonder what it will be like this year?

The image of drought and thirst and the need for refreshing water comes up again and again in the Bible. We know that we cannot live without water – it’s a basic requirement for life. We know, too, that feeling thirsty is never a pleasant experience.

The Bible uses the image to remind us that whenever we feel spiritually thirsty, God will provide us with the refreshing water that we need … water that will bring us life, abundant life.

Jesus promises to give us that water:

‘No one who drinks the water I give will ever be thirsty again. The water I give is like a flowing fountain that gives eternal life.’

If you feel thirsty, if you feel that there must be more to life than what you’ve got at the moment, ask Jesus to give you his living water. He promises to fill you to overflowing.

Prayer Boxes

One of the wonderful gifts that God gives us is his invitation to us to come to him in prayer, and his promise to listen to and answer us when we pray. Prayer is really about expressing the deep concerns of our hearts to God.

Prayer is something we can do on our own, but it’s also something that God calls us to do alongside other people.

As members of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, we believe that God wants us to pray for the whole community of Barnby Dun. We pray at all our services, and we pray as individuals at home, but we also meet together on Tuesday evenings, at 6.00pm in church, to pray specifically for the people of this village, and for the wider community of Doncaster.

This is not a private gathering – everyone is welcome to come along. It’s a very simple service, with space to remember people in prayer by the lighting of candles, followed by time for reflection while music is played. We finish by 6.30pm.

If you would like us to include you or someone you know in our prayers, please let us know. We shall be putting Prayer Boxes in different places in the village (eg the Old School and the Post Office). These are for you to use. Write the name of the person you want to be prayed for (their first name will do) on a piece of paper and put it in the box. The names will be collected regularly, and we shall pray for them.

God loves each one of us so much … and he wants us to talk to him about the things that are important to us, and especially about the people on our hearts. Using the Prayer Boxes is one way of entering into prayer.
