Three Prayers for Christmas
Christmas approaches. The reminders have been in the shops for weeks already – encouraging us to buy ever more, sophisticated, expensive gifts.
Whenever you started, and no matter how much or how little you plan, or are able, to spend on gifts for others this year my prayer is that you will give some time to stop the wrapping and writing and have the opportunity to read or hear the basic story; the Good News of Christmas as told to us in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke in our Bible.
It’s the reason why we celebrate! God himself came to share human life; Jesus was born, in troubled times, into the simplicity of a working class family, miles from their home; visited only by poor shepherds (despised in their society) and foreigners from the East seeking a new king.
“He who was rich became poor, for our sakes”, wrote a Christian teacher some years later to encourage his readers to share the blessings they have with others less fortunate than themselves. So my second prayer is that as we share gifts with friends and family we will also remember those who are less fortunate than we are and share with them too.
And my final prayer for you all is that you will be able to share in the celebrations sometime during Christmas Day with at least one other person.
Christmas Blessings and prayers for the New Year,
