Taking time to listen
At this time of year, Christian people observe the season of Lent. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (22nd February this year) and finishes at Easter.
This season was originally intended to be a period of training and preparation – specifically for those adults who were going to become members of the Church by being baptized at Easter.
As the Church developed, Lent became a period for all Christian people to focus more fully on their faith. Many people found that a period of fasting helped them to focus ... and so the tradition of ‘giving something up for Lent’ began.
In the busyness of our 21st century lives, it is important for us to set aside periods of time, so that we can reflect on our lives: how things have been in the past, how things are now, and how things might be different in the future ... and where God is in all that.
This period of Lent is a useful period in the year to do that reflecting – which can become a way of listening to God.
Some people find it very easy to do that on their own ... most of us need some help. One way in which we can find that help is by meeting together in small groups. There will be a number of groups meeting during Lent in different people’s homes in Barnby Dun. We shall be following a course called ‘Experiencing God’s Love’ written by Steven Croft, the Bishop of Sheffield. If you would like to join in, please contact me on 882835 or at peterandpaul@hotmail.co.uk
